Fort Canning Centre keeps two free exhibitions through 31 March 2027

Two free National Parks Board exhibitions stay open at Fort Canning Centre through Wednesday, 31 March 2027. Hidden World: Creepy Crawlies of Singapore sits in Gallery@L3 with more than 120 Singapore insect and arachnid species. Fort Canning Centre: A Century of Transformation fills the atrium and Studio@L3 with the building's own 100-year file. Both run daily from 10:00 to 18:00. The hill is the western edge of the Bugis, Waterloo Street, and Bras Basah walk, about two Downtown Line stops from Bugis MRT.

NParks published the pair on 4 September 2026 as the Fort Canning half of the 11th Singapore Botanic Gardens and Fort Canning Park Heritage Festival. Festival late hours ended on 13 September. From 14 September the galleries keep ordinary daytime hours through March. Admission is free. The rooms are wheelchair accessible. Little Day Out walked the insect show during the festival week and counted the same 120-plus species list as the press note. 联合早报 previewed the hang the day before opening and named the same new plant bug.

The insect gallery is the one that stops people. NParks warns that the prints are large, macro, and highly detailed. Anyone with a spider or insect phobia should treat that as a real warning, not a joke on the poster. Live tanks sit among the photographs, so you can look at a water strider on a wall and then at a living insect under a magnifying glass a few metres away.

Six rooms of hunters, mimics, and a Fort Canning original

The story splits insects, six legs and three body parts, from arachnids, eight legs. The hang is six named sections.

  • Nature's Hunters. Stealth, speed, jaws, venom.
  • Hide & Seek Champions. Camouflage and mimicry, including animals that borrow another species' colours.
  • Show Off to Defend. Aposematism, the bright warning colours that tell a predator to back off.
  • Web of Life. Pollinators, recyclers, and food for everything else on the hill.
  • Treasures of Singapore. Species with a national story.
  • Treasure of Fort Canning. What lives on this slope.

The press photographs that NParks released with the launch are the ones worth hunting on the walls. Fiora Li's katydid, Phyllomimus inversus, sits on a green leaf and copies the leaf's brown scars so well you have to look twice. Ivan Neo's female long-horned orb weaver, Macracantha arcuata, uses long median spines and loud colour as a keep-away sign. Yap Ee-Hean's plate of Ernestinus singaporensis is the local find. NParks calls it a new-to-science species described in 2026 from specimens taken at both the Singapore Botanic Gardens and Fort Canning Park. It turns up on the undersides of Alocasia leaves. On this hill, staff have seen it along Five Kings Walk and near Artisan's Garden, a short walk from the Centre once you leave the galleries. The Straits Times measured it at about 3 mm.

Little Day Out's walkthrough matches the official list and adds the practical bit: the live tanks hold attention longer than the prints for children. Bring a small person who can stand still at a glass box. The giant forest ant, Dinomyrmex gigas, and the soil invertebrates in the Treasures hang are the photographs that make the room feel like a field guide blown up to poster size.

The barracks that became a squash hall, then an arts house

Downstairs and in Studio@L3, the other exhibition is about the building you are already inside. Fort Canning Centre opened in 1926 as a British army barrack block. NParks' archival photograph, credited to the Administration Report of the Singapore Municipality for 1926 and the National Archives, shows the new white block sitting in open ground. The wall text in Section I, The Beginning of Change, walks the same ground: the hill as military HQ, then the 1970s conversion into what NParks still calls the world's largest commercial squash complex, then an arts tenancy, then today's visitor centre and gallery.

The hang is photographs, documents, and a few artefacts, not a costume drama. It is the better half of the visit if insects make you itchy. The two shows share a lift and the same closing time, so one ticket-free afternoon covers both. The fungi exhibition that launched on the same press day is at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, not on this hill. Skip that detour unless you already planned a Gardens day.

The 17 October guided tour still takes names

Fort Canning Park volunteers lead a free 90-minute tour of both exhibitions on Saturday, 17 October 2026, from 10:00 to 11:30. The NParks event page still shows a Register form, not a waitlist. Children aged 12 and below must come with an adult. Walk-in to the galleries does not need that booking. If you only want the rooms, go any day before 18:00 and skip the tour form.

From Bugis MRT, take the Downtown Line two stops west to Fort Canning, DT20, and use Exit B. Dhoby Ghaut is the other interchange if you are already on the North-South or Circle Line. The walk from Waterloo Street's Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple is uphill through the Civic District, roughly 15 to 20 minutes, and it is the same walk many locals already do after a temple visit when they want shade. There is no hawker centre on the hill. Albert Centre remains the meal stop back toward Bugis Street.

Queries go to nparks_fcp@nparks.gov.sg. Check the two NParks event pages before a public holiday, because hours can shift even when the end date stays 31 March 2027.

Hidden World: Creepy Crawlies of Singapore Fort Canning Centre: A Century of Transformation

展线把六足昆虫和八足蛛形动物分开,共六个单元:Nature's Hunters(猎手)、Hide & Seek Champions(伪装)、Show Off to Defend(警戒色)、Web of Life(传粉与分解)、Treasures of Singapore(新加坡故事)、Treasure of Fort Canning(这座山坡上的物种)。

Section I The Beginning of Change
